2016-17 Womens Sports Media Rights Deals

Here is a brief comparison of known Australian womens sports tv deals.

Australian Football League – Womens

  • Two year deal
  • No Additional rights funds
  • Production costs covered by Foxtel and the Seven Network
  • Opening game of the season, every saturday night game and the grand final live and on the Seven Network
  • All games live on Foxfooty
  • All games live on the AFL website
  • All games live on the AFL app

National Netball League

  • Five year deal commencing 2017
  • There does not appear to be a direct media rights funds component as far as I can tell.
  • Nine and Telstra will cover the costs of broadcast production.
  • Saturday night live double-header on Nine, as well as two delayed games. All these games will be seen on Nine’s broadcast platform as well as 9NOW.
  • Telstra will broadcast two exclusive matches per week live via Telstra TV as well as simulcast Nine’s two live matches
  • All games will be available live on a “Netball Live” mobile app
  • Netball Australia will generate revenue from the partnership by Nine helping with sponsorships and advertising for on-court assets, signage and bibs, sharing the revenue with Netball Australia.
  • Nine will also split the revenue for broadcast television advertising spots sold during the games
  • Nine and Telstra will also have rights to Netball Australia’s international matches, the Fast5 competition, the Constellation Cup between Australia and New Zealand as well as the Quad Series between Australia, NZ, South Africa and England.

Womens Big Bash League

  • There is presently no separate media deal for the WBBL.
  • A total of 12 matches will be broadcast live and free on Network Ten this summer – two more than during WBBL|01
  • 10 will be shown on Channel 10 and two on ONE HD.
  • 47 fixtures broadcast to fans live and free on both the WBBL’s Facebook page and Cricket Australia’s cricket.co.au website
  • Cricket Australian and Ten share production costs.

W-League

  • Fox Sports and ABC will both show a live broadcast of the match of the round, to be staged as double headers with the Hyundai A-League match on Sunday afternoon.
  • ESPN 3 will televise live W-League games in the USA.

    The W league has by far the biggest potential reach of any of these other women sports. The market in the USA is in the tens of millions . The option to on sell these games into Asia is also an option and Optus looks like taking thse .
