Tennis Australia reported a comprehensive profit of 4.656m from revenue of 505.786m as it recovered from the previous years 75m loss.

Attendance

A total of 346,468 fans attended Australian Open 2022. Prior to the tournament crowds for AO 2022 were capped at 50 percent, increased to 65 percent for the semifinals and again to 80 percent for the finals. The numbers were significantly up on AO 2021 which had a total attendance of 130,374 and was affected by a five-day mid-event lockdown. AO 2020 hosted a record crowd of 812,174 across the 14 days.

More than 185,000 attended lead-in tournaments in three capital cities and regional Victoria

Broadcast

Nine Entertainment reported record ratings.

Nine’s coverage of the Australian Open 2022 has reached a national audience of 12.5 million viewers (Metro: 8.977 million / Regional: 3.523 million) for its linear broadcast on Channel 9 and 9Gem.

The combination of the Women’s Final and the Men’s Doubles Final on Saturday, January 29 gave the 9Network the highest primetime commercial shares in OzTAM history with People 25-54 (81.2%), 16-39 (84.9%) and Total People (78.6%).

Across the full day (including all sessions of tennis), metro TV audiences are up by 39.5% on Channel 9 and up by 34.2% on 9Gem, compared to last year’s Australian Open.

Across the full day (including all sessions of tennis), regional TV audiences are up by 47.8% on Channel 9 compared to last year’s Australian Open.

The average national audience for the night sessions is (including Men’s and Women’s Finals) is 1.2 million – an increase of 37.9% on 2021.

In the BVOD space, various sessions of the Australian Open take out all ten of the Top 10 live streamed programs of the year to date.

On 9Now, more than 636 million minutes of Australian Open coverage was streamed, representing a year-on-year increase of 163%.

An average of 391,000 people per day tuned into 9Now to stream the Australian Open.

Saturday night’s Women’s Final Match, in which Ash Barty defeated Danielle Collins 6-3, 7-6, soared  to a peak national audience of 4.261 million (Metro: 3.074 million/ Regional: 1.187 million) and a national average audience of 3.577 million (Metro: 2.581 million / Regional: 995,000). It is the highest rating Australian Open Women’s Final of all time and Australia’s highest rating program of the year to date

The Women’s Final recorded the highest live BVOD audience of the Australian Open ever, with 241,000 people tuning in on 9Now. The match is 4.4 times higher than last year’s Women’s Final and 1.7 times higher than last year’s Men’s Final.

Nine’s broadcast of last night’s Men’s Final of the Australian Open achieved a national peak audience of 3.136 million (Metro: 2.347 million / Regional: 789,000). The match, in which Rafael Nadal came back from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, secured a national average audience of 2.095 million (Metro: 1.613 million / Regional: 482,000). It is the highest rating Men’s Final in four years (linear and BVOD viewing combined).

On 9Now, the Men’s Final recorded a Live BVOD Audience of 227,000 – a year-on-year increase of 157% and the highest live BVOD Audience of an Australian Open Men’s Final ever. Day 14 recorded the highest live minutes streamed of the Australian Open ever, with 87 million live minutes streamed (+449% year-on-year). 636,000 people tuned in to the Australian Open yesterday via 9Now – the highest of the tournament.

The all-Aussie Men’s Doubles Final on Saturday, which saw Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis defeat Matt Ebden and Max Purcell 7-5, 6-4, was the highest rating Australian Open Men’s Doubles match of all time. It drew a peak audience of 3.154 million (Metro: 2.303 million / Regional: 851,000) and a national average audience of 2.297 million (Metro: 1.725 million / Regional: 572,000).

Facilities

Since 2007, more than $29 million has been invested into the National Court Rebate initiative, which partners with all levels of government and local communities. This investment continued throughout the past financial year,
including to 20 flood-affected venues.

Participation

With more than 18,000 courts nationwide and 2324 affilliated clubs and venues, tennis is a widely accessible sport. This is refl ected in strong participation numbers, with 303,607 club members and 83,866 competitive
players. More than 695,000 also participated in a Tennis Australia program during the past year.

Independent AusPlay data shows participation grew by 14 per cent to 1.514 million in the 2021 calendar year. Embedded in this number was a 20 per cent increase in the number of adults playing tennis. More than 634,000 young players experienced Tennis Hot Shots, our official start-up program, in the past year. Another 40,000 kids enjoyed AO Holiday Programs delivered by 275 coaches at 450 venues in January.

For the sixth straight year, the Tennis in Schools program was the No.1 requested and delivered sport in the Sporting Schools initiative.

There were more than 5000 young athletes in Talent Development programs throughout the nation and 40 players, aged between 15 and 23, invited into the National Tennis Academy in Brisbane.  800 players,
aged between 11 and 18, participate in state-based National Development Squads, with 4000 plus players aged from 10 to 15 from regional and metro areas involved in zone squads.
